The CIMBC Award for Lender BDM of the Year (Alternative Lending)
They’re always one of the most eagerly anticipated events in Canada’s mortgage industry calendar – but this year, the Canadian Mortgage Awards felt extra special. Having been staged as a virtual event for the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CMAs were back as a fully in-person gala at a sold-out Liberty Grand in Toronto at the end of April, with the consensus being that this was their biggest and best iteration yet. Excitement and jubilation were palpable in the air on April 28 as hundreds of mortgage professionals from across the country gathered for the prestigious ceremony, which recognized the industry’s top achievers over the past 12 months and beyond.

A triumphant return
After two years being held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian Mortgage Awards were back as a spectacular, sold-out in-person gala in 2022
Welcome to the 2022 Canadian Mortgage Awards! CIMBC is proud to be the Event Partner for the 2022 Canadian Mortgage Awards and would like to extend a very warm welcome and thank you for joining us at this prestigious event. Its great to be back LIVE for a Best-in-Class Awards Gala evening where we honor the exemplars and truly recognize the leading lights in the Mortgage industry. The pandemic over the last couple of years has tested us all in the way we do business, it has also shown the resiliency and adaptivity of the Canadian Mortgage Broker industry. Canadians more than ever have placed their confidence and trust in the value of choice that Mortgage Brokers provide them in support of their homeownership and financing needs. At CIMBC we strongly believe in the value we add to the broker industry through the support we offer to our Member Brokers. We are committed to assisting with the growth of all our Members through a Membership that offers unique programs and services that deliver a competitive advantage. CIMBC interactively contributes to the building of top shelf distinguishable independent brands within the entire lender community which is reflective of CIMBC’s Independent Model Unity Empowers. Tonight, we also recognize and support the MortgageJake Scholarship Fund in memory of Jake Abramowicz, a fellow Mortgage Colleague; a charity which provides assistance to students from disadvantaged communities in Toronto entering an Ontario University. We wish you and your family a safe and healthy future and hope you enjoy tonight’s 2022 Canadian Mortgage Awards.
The Coalition of Independent Mortgage Brokers of Canada (CIMBC) was created to help entrepreneurial brokerages transition to building a genuine independent brand, with a solid structure and a stronger bottom line for the independent, not the network.
Just as importantly, it also allowed friends, colleagues and partners to reconnect in a face-to-face setting, with many not having met in person since the outbreak of the pandemic over two years ago. That formed the backdrop for what one award winner fittingly described as an “electrifying” event that marked a welcome opportunity for attendees to celebrate the best and brightest in the mortgage space and raise a glass to some of the industry’s top performers. Anticipation was at fever pitch as John Bargis, president and CEO of event partner Coalition of Independent Mortgage Brokers of Canada (CIMBC) got proceedings underway with the opening speech of the evening. Bargis said it was a “real honour” to be a partner for the CMAs, which he described as a gathering of the finest professionals Canada’s mortgage industry has to offer. “This is the crème de la crème of the awards representing the Canadian mortgage industry, and CIMBC is really at the forefront of representation for all the best of the best and best in class in the mortgage industry – and we absolutely wouldn’t miss it,” he said. Bigger and better than ever The event, hosted by award-winning CBC news anchor Suhana Meharchand, saw attendees mingle at a cocktail reception before the awards ceremony and dinner banquet got underway, followed by a post-awards celebration at the venue. The chance to gather, reconnect and celebrate as an industry was one of the most rewarding aspects of the night, according to Grant Armstrong, director of national sales and lending at Community Trust, which sponsored the Alternative Broker Specialist of the Year Award. “It’s been a unique couple of years,” he said. “2022 is going to be a different kind of roller coaster… but tonight we get together to celebrate the success, share some good stories, see some old friends and colleagues and just look forward to what’s going to happen over the next 12 months.” That sentiment was echoed by Secure Capital MIC’s Hollie Gardiner, who won the Matrix Mortgage Global Award for Lender Underwriter of the Year (Private Lending). She said those in attendance were a veritable “who’s who” of Canada’s mortgage industry, with the event offering the chance to network, rub shoulders and toast the mortgage space’s finest. “It really recognizes those that have put in the work and the dedication, and realizes the achievements that they’re making,” she said. “It’s a real honour to come this evening.” Stepping up to the plate Anyone even remotely familiar with Canada’s mortgage space will know that recent years have been some of the most challenging on record for the industry, with skyrocketing activity across the country’s housing and mortgage markets coinciding with a pandemic that forced professionals of all stripes to radically adjust their approach to the job. Those circumstances have also allowed mortgage professionals an opportunity to shine, with the industry’s top performers displaying resilience, innovation, dedication, and sheer tenacity to excel in a market rife with challenges and opportunities. Kuljit Singh, an industry veteran and broker-owner at AKAL Mortgages, described persistence as the key to success in both a professional and personal capacity as he accepted the Citadel Mortgages Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Mortgage Industry. “Never give up and stay true to your desired course. Be passionate about what you do, engage and care for others with the right attitude, and [if you] always keep your ultimate objective in mind, success will be yours,” he said. Winners were announced across 26 illustrious categories, with new awards including the Best Media Campaign gong and prizes for the best regional brokers throughout the country. Asked how they had set themselves apart and taken their performance to the next level during the previous 12 months, many winners emphasized the importance of strong, constant communication, and remaining connected with colleagues and partners even when the pandemic threw up challenges along the way. “This year, and the last couple of years, it was incredibly important to stay in touch with everyone in a very timely manner to make sure we were on top of everything,” said Fisgard’s Reaza Ali, winner of the CIMBC Award for Lender BDM of the Year (Private Lending). “The way the market has gone, it seems like everyone needs something today. So to be at the top service level as much as possible is extremely important.” The ability to work effectively as a team also came to the fore during the past year, with Erin Aubrey – representing RFA Mortgage Corporation, which won Best Media Campaign of the Year – putting the emphasis on the teamwork and clear vision that propelled the company to the win. “We are a small but mighty team, with a clear idea of where we want to go and how we can best adapt to our ever-changing world,” she said. A special resonance There was a clear feeling among attendees that this year’s CMAs were laden with significance, marking a return to a degree of normality that everyone hopes will last following the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. The irreplaceable role of mortgage professionals shone brightly during the last two years, with the mortgage industry playing a vital part in consulting and advising borrowers and homebuyers through increasingly complex economic circumstances. Along with slashed (and now rising) interest rates, the past year has seen changes to the mortgage qualifying rate in Canada, affordability challenges for many buyers, and frenetic bidding wars in the country’s hottest markets. Canadians turned in huge numbers to mortgage professionals during that period of disruption and uncertainty – and the mortgage industry responded with a level of service and support that many believe has set it in good stead as the country, and the world, move toward a hopeful post-pandemic recovery in the coming years. “I think there are a lot of challenges and headwinds right on our doorstep,” said Brian Leland, executive vice president of underwriting at Home Trust Company (sponsor of the Award for Woman of Distinction). “Never has there been a better time for mortgage brokers to be there, to add the value proposition that they deliver back to Canadian mortgage consumers.” Read on to get all the reaction from the gold winners, Excellence Awardees and sponsors at the landmark 2022 Canadian Mortgage Awards. Key Media and Canadian Mortgage Professional would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and nominees and thank our esteemed sponsors for contributing to what was an unforgettable night in Toronto.

We have been saying “Welcome Home” since the very first day we opened for business. For decades, our team of dedicated professionals has helped people put down roots, even when they thought it wasn’t possible. We have changed the way lending is done in this country and changed countless lives along the way. HOME TRUST began in 1977 with a goal to help all Canadians achieve their goals. We have grown to become a leading financial services institution in Canada, but that’s not what matters most to us. What matters is the mortgage broker who was able to help someone who wouldn’t otherwise qualify for a mortgage to purchase their first home. Or the business for self customer who was able to expand their operations. Or the newcomer to Canada with big dreams of building a new life. The stories of our customers — those who turn to us, who put their hopes in us, who rely on us every day to find a way forward — are our motivation to succeed.
