Broker of the Year (Regional – AB)
For Leanne Conroy, regional director of sales, MCAN Financial, the 18th annual Canadian Mortgage Awards celebrated the much-needed ingenuity and grit that brokers brought to a challenging market over the last 12 months. “We needed an influx of those traits because the industry experienced so much change,” she said, noting that sponsorship is critical because it keeps events like the CMAs, or “the Oscars of the industry,” going. People should feel special for the hard work that they do, she added, which is why the lender showed its support via The MCAN Award for New Brokerage of the Year.

Winners Using a simple points system to aggregate judges’ votes, the Excellence Awardee with the top score in a category was named the winner. Winners were announced at the awards show on May 2, 2024 and on the website. They are promoted in CMP magazine and online channels.

The Scarlett Network Award for Digital Innovation in a Brokerage
“It’s not movies – it’s mortgages, but we all feel like celebrities tonight. Everybody needs to be congratulated to give them that gusto to keep going.” Toronto’s Congress Centre welcomed hundreds of mortgage professionals on May 2 for the glitzy event, with award sponsors stopping for a quick chat with CMP against a backdrop of raucous laughter and cheering. Damon Knights, VP sales and distribution, Equitable Bank, spoke about the lender’s sponsorship of the award for Canadian Broker of the Year and said it ties back to honouring what they believe is the most important profession in Canadian banking. “Mortgage brokers, together with lenders, have the opportunity to truly influence the lives of Canadians,” he said. “We want to recognize the top of the top, the best of the best. By getting together at a venue like this one, that’s exactly what we’re doing. And literally everybody’s here – it’s an amazing thing.” For Dong Lee, CEO of Axiom Innovations, sponsoring the award for Digital Innovation in a Brokerage was a no-brainer. “Innovation is in our name,” he quipped, adding the Scarlett Network is “hard at work on all things AI and machine learning” – and he agreed the first-class event was much needed after a tough year. Chris Turcotte, president, Centum Financial, is a long-time supporter of the CMAs. Looking forward to it every year, this time around Centum was “four-tables strong” as Turcotte always recommends bringing as much of your team as possible. “At every opportunity, if you get to win from the business, you’ve got to put back,” he said of Centum’s sponsorship of Young Achiever of the Year, an award he often found himself up for back in the earlier days of his career. “It’s near and dear, and a lot of our corporate team are young mortgage brokers. We’re always in pursuit of building tools for that next generation.” Sponsoring the award for Woman of Distinction provided Home Trust with a route to recognize female leaders across the industry and showcase their talent. The lender had a couple of nominees, and “it’s been fantastic to spend time celebrating their wonderful year,” said Elizabeth Cescon, VP residential underwriting. “We work so hard, it’s important to play hard,” she added. While it was definitely a night that recognized those who go above and beyond, Cheryl Buhs, VP national sales, RFA Mortgage Corp. and Mortgage Bank, noted it’s also a chance to mingle and make connections on a different level than the day to day. As a company that invests significantly in charitable giving, sponsoring The RFA Award for Excellence in Philanthropy & Community Service was clearly the right fit. “RFA is very much involved in community, so it makes sense for us to be a part of this,” she said. “It’s naturally in our culture.” For Taylor Lewis, director of operations and strategic partnerships for Canadian Mortgages Inc., as one of the leading private lenders in the country, its choice of sponsorship – Broker of the Year – Private Lending – aligned perfectly with its “bread and butter.” “It’s important we recognize greatness at all points. If you’re able to contribute to that, why wouldn’t you? It’s about being there for our broker partners, trying to be a leader in the industry, and pushing the agenda forward to help Canadians get more homes.” Frank Giacomini, AVP at CWB Optimum Mortgage, also looked at the big picture, stating, “We don’t just lend money; we make the dreams of Canadians come true.” Whether it’s investment, travel, or homeownership, CWB Optimum – sponsor of the award for Brokerage of the Year (25 employees of more) – does “a lot for society, and a relationship with this broker community is incredible for all of us.” “Brokers do a wonderful job fighting on behalf of the consumers, and, frankly, it makes the banks seek that business and foster those relationships.” Shayle Rothman, managing partner of Real Estate Lawyers.ca, operating the division of MortgageCLosingCentres.ca, agreed that sponsoring an award is a perfect way to give back to those who are often across the table from him when closing transactions. Seeing the effort brokers put into managing client expectations and getting the deal over the finish line is incredible, he added, noting “they’re in the trenches with us.” As a second-annual industry judge, Andria Barrett, founder of The Diversity Agency, realized she had a difficult task. Reading the applications and then sitting among the passion in the room on event night made it clear that every single nominee loved what they do, something shared by stakeholders across the industry. “They love supporting Canadians, they love their colleagues, and they love their community,” she said. “As a business owner as well, I have a soft spot for others who invest their blood, sweat, tears, and lots and lots of money to do the job they care so deeply about.” Perhaps John Bourassa, COO of Haventree Bank, which sponsored the award for Lifetime Achievement in the Mortgage Industry, said it best: “The mortgage industry, as vast as it is across the country, is still a pretty small community. We all rely on each other.”
Research The Canadian Mortgage Awards team conducted research and drew on knowledge and information gained through Canadian Mortgage Professional magazine to support and supplement nominations received and to ensure that no one deserving of recognition was missed. Excellence Awardees were determined from both pools of information. A corresponding announcement was then made across our media outlets.

We have been saying “Welcome Home” since the very first day we opened for business. For decades, our team of dedicated professionals has helped people put down roots, even when they thought it wasn’t possible. We have changed the way lending is done in this country and changed countless lives along the way. Home Trust began in 1977 with a goal to help all Canadians achieve their goals. We have grown to become a leading financial services institution in Canada, but that’s not what matters most to us. What matters is the mortgage broker who was able to help someone who wouldn’t otherwise qualify for a mortgage to purchase their first home. Or the business for self customer who was able to expand their operations. Or the newcomer to Canada with big dreams of building a new life. The stories of our customers — those who turn to us, who put their hopes in us, who rely on us every day to find a way forward — are our motivation to succeed. Website: www.hometrust.ca

AGENDA
Paul Lucas Global Editor Insurance and Mortgage
It’s been quite the year, hasn’t it? After an unprecedented volume of Bank of Canada rate moves, market turbulence ensued and the jobs of everyone in the mortgage space became that much harder. Suddenly the joys of helping those excited young couples into their first homes, were replaced by the disappointments of letting them know they didn’t meet the affordability criteria of the loan they were hoping to secure. Like a flash, the reliable client that had never had an issue before was picking up the phone and panicking, wondering how they were going to afford their payments when their fixed rate ends. It's been tough. Yet when 2024 began, the narrative was beginning to change. Brokers interviewed by Canadian Mortgage Professional described a cautious optimism, a feeling that “yes times have been tough, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Still, there was a need to be proactive. As one broker told us in December, “there was a point in time when everybody wanted to buy a home because of one reason or another: the COVID effect, the low rates, people being at home and having money to spend.” Those days, he suggested were gone – but by “making those calls, doing those presentations”, brokers could still find success. And so it transpired. Each of you here today – whether an ultimate winner or an excellence awardee, or here to champion one of those colleagues, knows how to make it through a hard time. Those tales of recessions past? Now you have one of your own. And you survived. And now you’re ready to thrive. We may not know when the market turns firmly in our favour, but the good times are coming again. And the Canadian Mortgage Awards 2024 is your version of a New Year’s Eve party. It’s your chance to look back, think of what you went through, remember how you persevered and congratulate yourself for doing it all. Then, let the joy take over. Welcome to Canadian Mortgage Awards 2024 – the party you have earned.
