Nominations Nominations were submitted via an online portal. The awards were free to enter. Individuals and companies could nominate themselves or their peers in unlimited categories. Submissions were required to focus on mortgage professionals and their achievements over the previous 12 months.
Confirmation of Excellence Awardees Once the research was completed, Excellence Awardees were selected in each category and notified via email. Excellence Awardees were announced on the NZ Adviser website on 12 February.
Judging The Insurance Business Awards team will send completed excellence awardee submissions to an independent panel of judges, comprising insurance industry leaders and senior representatives. Judges will be well known and well respected within the industry and their judgment will be impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a particular category will recuse themselves from judging that category. Judges will review the excellence awardee submissions and allocate a score for each excellence awardee. The excellence awardee with the highest score in each category once the judging process has been completed will be named the winner.
Judging An independent panel of judges appointed by NZ Adviser, comprised of mortgage and finance leaders from around New Zealand, reviewed the submissions and allocated each Excellence Awardee a confidential and impartial score.

The gorgeous and multi-talented Leah Panapa is a woman of many skills. Her infectious personality and sultry tone have seen her rise the ranks throughout her three decades in broadcasting - holding many impressive posts during this time. Leah’s exceptional broadcasting ability led her to win a whopping 10 radio awards for Best Breakfast Show. For over 10 years she was a cornerstone of The Morning Rumble breakfast show on The Rock. From there she moved to The Sound, hosting the nationwide breakfast show for over three years with Mark Richardson. Leah moved to the rarefied air that is ‘talk radio’ in 2019, initially solo host of her own show Magic Nights, then moved to the coveted afternoon slot with co-host Danny Watson. In March 2022 newly branded talk radio station Today FM was launched by Mediaworks and Leah was reunited with her friend and former The Sound co-host Mark Richardson in the afternoon show 12pm – 4pm weekdays, to unpack the important topics and laugh about the absurd. As comfortable behind the microphone as on stage, Leah is an excellent MC and host. Leah is renowned for her fantastic sense of humour, warm nature and ability to woo any crowd. She has a real affinity with engaging the audience, encompassing the perfect balance between professionalism and downright hilarity. She has a knack for reading a room - and her years of live radio experience have enabled her to effortlessly think and react on the fly. Leah has hosted a wide array of events over the years; from hospitality and charity bashes, to the NZ Law Awards and most recently the 2022 ACT Party Conference. She has also held her own in debates against the likes of comedians Jeremy Corbett and Gary McCormick, and tackled live stand-up performances on Comedy Central TV & TV3 to rave reviews.

Meet Jarni Blair, a highly skilled and passionate guitarist from New Zealand with over 18 years of experience in the music industry. Jarni's love for music was inspired by his father, who has played in bands since the late 60s. At the young age of ten, Jarni began performing and continued playing in various bands throughout his school years. He transitioned to solo performance and song writing in his final year of high school, which he pursued for quite some time before returning to collaborate with other bands and artists. Jarni's music is a fusion of pop singer-songwriter, jazz, and blues, which he describes as "Geek Pop." He is heavily influenced by legends such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton. He also puts his own spin on cover songs, keeping the essence of the originals while adding his own unique flavours. Jarni's successful career includes playing and writing music alongside big names such as Kings, Jason Kerrison, The Jordan Luck Band, and his single 'Higher Than The Sky' was on the NZ Music charts for a couple of weeks in 2020. Currently, he plays with one of NZ's household names, 'Summer Thieves', who have amassed a significant following over the past decade. They are currently touring and playing with L.A.B. on their Australian Tour. With plenty of opportunities on the horizon, Jarni's future in music looks promising. He continues to showcase his talent and passion for music, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who has the pleasure of experiencing his performances.

Liberty Financial, the event partner, underscored the importance of recognising the pinnacle of industry performance by sponsoring the national Liberty Adviser of the Year category. “We extend special congratulations to both Danielle Happy and Satyan Mehra for their win in the Adviser of the Year – Specialist Lending category and Laura te Kaat for her win as Liberty Adviser of the Year,” said Liberty CEO Aaron Skilton. Campbell Smith, country head of New Zealand at event sponsor Pepper Money, said the specialist lender was “proud to be associated with the NZMA awards”. “It’s a truly fantastic event and represents a unique opportunity to recognise the best in our industry, and the very real and positive impact these advisers deliver for their customers via qualified, quality advice. Again, a well-deserved congratulations to all of the 2024 category nominees and winners from all of us at Pepper Money.” The winners and why they won Of course, it wouldn’t be the New Zealand Mortgage Awards without the winners under the limelight. Chris Poledniok, Westpac NZ national manager of retention and third party channels, said it was a huge honour to be named Lender of the Year. “This award is thanks to the passion and commitment of our exceptional business development managers, as well as numerous teams that are focused on working with our advisers to provide the right solutions for our customers and communities,” said Poledniok. “We understand the crucial role that advisers play, and how important our relationship is to push forward to create better futures for homeowners across NZ. This award is a proud moment for us and cements our commitment to grow, innovate and support great outcomes for our customers.” For Gus Evans, director at Spring Loans and winner of the Avanti Finance Commercial Finance Adviser of the Year award, the win was extra sweet after being named runner-up in the category last year. “It’s personally really satisfying as it’s the culmination of many, many hours of hard work professionally,” he said. “It’s actually a recognition of how many clients I’ve saved money, helped them grow their business, achieve business ownership dreams.” Evans said the event was a “great night to celebrate success” and to catch up with old friends and colleagues. In particular, he said it was “really special” to receive the award from “great mate” Nathan Miglani – managing director and head of lending at NZ Mortgages. “New Zealand is a small place, and it seems like a large percentage of the top-quality people share the same profession as me,” Evans said. “Our industry is one which you would think encourages a ‘lone shark’ mentality, but to be honest everyone was celebrating each other’s success, which is really encouraging.” The New Zealand mortgage community Evan’s words highlight that the NZ Mortgage Awards isn’t simply a competition but a celebration of a community built on trust. The laughter, shared stories and genuine camaraderie speak volumes about the deep connections within the industry. These are the people entrusted with New Zealanders’ financial futures, and the night served as a powerful reminder of the immense responsibility they shoulder with such dedication. “Overall, we’ve had a pretty crap few years, so it was nice for the industry to band together and celebrate our success. We need events like this as an industry,” said Jeff Royle, business owner at iLender and one of the 24 judges who adjudicated the 2024 Awards. Ben Mune, adviser at Ascend Financial Services and winner of the First Mortgage Trust New Adviser of the Year award, summed it up perfectly. “The event was a blast, with a good atmosphere and open bar,” he said. “I think our industry is full of really cool people. Everyone shares a similar mentality of working really hard, but also likes to play hard. So, no matter what event our industry runs, everyone always finds a way to have a good time, and this was no different.”
The 2024 New Zealand Mortgage Awards (NZMA) wasn't just about trophies and accolades. Beneath the elegant backdrop of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, a sense of shared purpose and quiet pride filled the air. Here, under the watchful gaze of Auckland's history, the industry celebrated the nation’s best advisers, lenders, BDMs and brokerages who make the dream of homeownership a reality for countless New Zealanders. A crowd of over 300 attended the cocktail-style event, on what is fast becoming the favourite night on the industry calendar.
